About Us

The idea for an association began back in 2010, during a casual BBQ at the home of our friends Moddy and Gemma. It started with a simple conversation among Tanzanian friends living in Queensland, a shared dream of creating a space where our community could connect, support one another, and celebrate our culture.

Over many gatherings, this idea took shape. In June 2012, it officially became a reality when The Tanzanian Association of Queensland (TAQ) was incorporated by our founding president, Dr. Sababu Kaitilla, and founding secretary, Dr. Rashid Mnette.

From the beginning, TAQ has been about more than just events and meetings. It was born from lived experience, the challenges of settling in a new country, the feelings of isolation, and the desire to stay connected to our roots. The founding members knew that what we needed wasn’t just an organisation, it was a family. A place to belong.

TAQ grew from pride: pride in Tanzanian culture, traditions, and resilience. Our community carries its identity with pride, not just in passports, but in language, food, music, and stories.

Today, TAQ has grown into a vibrant and welcoming community with over 105 active members and around 70 children. What began as friends sharing food and memories has blossomed into a structured association with cultural events, youth programs, Swahili language classes, and dedicated support for new arrivals.

We’re proud of where we’ve come from and even more excited for where we’re going. TAQ remains a bridge between Tanzania and Australia, guided by unity and built on the belief that every Tanzanian deserves to feel at home, no matter how far from home they may
